THE Westville Country Club management and community are devastated about the major issue of sewage flowing into the eco-trails and river.

The sewage has been flowing non-stop for more than three weeks now, and nothing is being done.

Lisa Nourse, Westville Country Club Manager, said it has taken them years of work doing alien eradication and work in the eco-trails to get the river ecosystem back.

“This is now being destroyed by the sewage leak flowing for weeks down-river, killing any living organism in its wake,” said a concerned Nourse.

Westville nature lover, Jean Senogles, said it is acknowledged that the eThekwini Municipality is hard-pressed after the April floods as there is damage to infrastructure in all areas of the city.

“A serious situation under these circumstances is always contamination of water resources. This is the case in a tributary of the Umbilo River which has its head waters north of Link Road, in the grounds of the Westville Civic Centre.”

According to Senogles, since the flood, the sewer has been emptying into a once-functioning riverine ecosystem.

“It is causing great concern as it is exacerbating the storm damage, hindering the return of the tributary to a functioning ecosystem, but even more concerning is the fear of diarrhoea and the diseases of diphtheria, typhoid, and cholera, especially to the Chesterville community,” she said.

PR Councillor Sanelisiwe Chabure said she has addressed the Wastewater Department since this is a serious problem that is causing health concerns due to contamination of water resources. “I have been informed that there was big damage to the infrastructure that will require a budget they currently do not have. I am constantly following up so that at least a solution can be found to divert this flow,” she said.
